I used to come home after work and take a nap for a couple of hours and then go out and over to the park in neighboring East Rutherford. It's where all the freaks hung out. We didn't call ourselves hippies back then, that was a name the straights made up. Two of the group lived in my old house we had moved out of a year before. Funny thing because when my folks were selling the house, a black couple came to look and my mom told them the house was sold. She said she lied "for the sake of the neighbors". So the guy that eventually bought the place gave it to his two freak sons to live in and the neighborhood quickly went to pot after that!
Too bad for the neighbors ha ha.
Don't know if they even recognized me, I wasn't that nice , clean cut little leaguer any more at that point and I bet they were mighty pissed at my parents.
After the kidnapping ordeal, dealing with the police was something I could do with out for awhile, but that was not to be. I had gone to the park one night with several hits of acid, and planning on sharing it, but no one else felt like tripping, and I hated walking around with drugs in my pocket, so I took it all myself.
Right after that, maybe ten minutes, a cop showed up.
There was probably a dozen or so of us there that night and the cop said we'd all have to leave because of "curfew". Well, I don't think there was such a thing and we all just ignored the guy. He went back to his car, radio'd in and put on his smokey the bear hat and came back...................
"you're under arrest!" he said to each one of us, giving pokes to the chest with his finger at the same time.

right on down the line, including me as I sat on the bench (in the picture) beginning to come on to the acid.
So, about that time, several more cop cars showed up and we were all loaded in for a ride to the station.
"sarge, get out the lawnmower, we're bringing em in!" smokey bellowed on the radio.
It was pretty crowded there at the station, stoned freaks everywhere and me....tripping my brains out at that point. The cops were called pigs back then and since I tended to see people as animals when under the influence of LSD, well, it was just perfect. Perfect pigs they were. oink oink.
They had me empty my pockets, which just earlier had been put into my stomach and then they took apart my radio. They took the batteries out, off came the back and then they shook it around and didn't find anything there but ......radio stuff.
No drugs were found, no felonies committed and since our only offense was curfew violation and they couldn't let us go ....because of curfew, they called our parents.
My dad came.

You see, the hair thing started before my run in with VP. I used to get a ride in the morning with my dad and a guy he worked with, up to the bus stop about 2 miles away. I took a bus to school, Bergen Tech in Hackensack. It's where all the problem children went . And one day he told me that his buddy didn't like my long hair and he didn't want me in the car unless I cut my hair.
That was when I really got into to walking everywhere.
I had lost any respect I had left for him because of that and then quitting school didn't help matters.

He walked into the station and glared at me, signed me out and we were on our way,
and not a word was said. We returned home, he went to his room and I went to mine.

I put Abbey Road on the record player and went out on the roof for awhile, one of my favorite places to get away from it all. Did some trip kind of dreaming for awhile out there, thought about how I had to get the fuck out of new jersey and then came back in and kicked back. I didn't know what to expect from the acid, since trips usually last 8-10 hours, I expected to be up all night and then some.

40th anniversary

It was 40 years ago today Sgt Pepper taught the band to play............
Well not exactly, that was more like 44 years I think. But 40 years ago this summer, is when the Woodstock music festival happened, 3 days of peace love and happiness. But this year also marks another occasion for me and that was my first summer as an emancipated adult. At 16 years of age it's a bit of a stretch to say that I was an adult, but nevertheless, after quitting high school in the spring and starting my work for a living life, an adult I was, like it or not. My launch into adulthood started when I was sent to the vice- principles office because my shop teacher ( machine shop) felt that my long hair was a safety issue. So the vice-principle told me I was suspended for a week and to come back with shorter hair. I disagreed that a haircut was the solution and suggested instead that I wear a welders cap to keep the hair out of my face. He thought about it for a millisecond and replied "that will be OK, as long as it is pink!"
* a little side note here, my hair was about as long a Ringo's in the picture.........
See, the thing is, my hair wasn't actually long enough to be a safety concern, it didn't fall over my eyes and it wasn't long enough to get caught in the machinery. They were just making an example of me, trying to break my balls.
So that was the verdict from the VP....."comeback in a week with a haircut or a pink welders cap, or don't come back!"

It all kinda started a couple of years earlier, 1967, the summer of love. My big sister ( badddddd influence) had gone to Frisco for a couple of months and came back a flower child. The country was going beserk with race riots, the cities were burning, popular music was changing with stuff like "white rabbit"and "for all it's worth". People were protesting the VietNam war. And then the summer of "68", Bobby Kennedy was murdered and the Chicago convention happened. I watched the convention police riots on tv and it changed me completely. Any respect that I might have had for "authority" or straights went right out the window.

Truth be told, I really sucked at school. I did well enough in shop class to get by but I didn't get algebra at all and english class sucked as well and most likely would fail and end up in summer school again. History was the only class I liked, usually aced everthing they threw at me and to this day it's still a very interesting subject for me.
So, after getting the word from MR. VP, my last words to him were..........bye.
On the bus ride home, my school books went flying out the window and I was on my way to whatever was going to happen next. I didn't tell my parents right away, in fact I can't say for sure now if I ever did actually tell them. I continued the regular routine of getting up in the morning, leaving and coming back at night.
My first job was at a plastics factory, the foreman hated me, probably because I was a filthy hippie, but I did ok for the short time I was there which ended when I had to have a tooth surgically removed and missed a day. When I showed up the next day, the foreman growled and said..."go to the office and get your pink slip!"
The next job at a chemical factory didn't last long either. I was a schlepper, hauling bags of chemicals from boxcars onto dollies and I'm telling you, that place was hotter than Haddes, they even had salt tablet dispensers on the walls so the worker bees wouldn't pass out and stop production. The next job, working in a peanut butter factory was better and I even received a promotion after about a week! See, the line mechanic hurt his back and since I had experience as a machinest, guess what?
I stayed there until they closed down a several months later ( not my fault :-) )and it was the job I was at when Woodstock happened. About a month earlier, I had borrowed money from my Bro to go see the band 10 Years After in Hackensack and had just finished paying him back..........
The minimum wage in "69" was $1.30 per hour and since I had just finished paying Bro back and was also buying groceries and stuff as payment for living with the parents, I was flat broke when a carload of my buddies pulled up and said.........
Hey! Wanna go to Woodstock?
Not realizing that the thing was going to be the biggest happening of the century AND free, I said......No, you guys have fun and I'll see ya when you get back!
It was still a great summer, had lots of fun, saved some money and even came close to getting charged with kidnapping the county district attorneys daughter. I had spent the afternoon with Carol and when we parted, she and a friend went over to "the city" and didn't return that night and I was the last person seen with her.....................
Boy was her daddy ready to lock me up and throw away the key!

June 17 (Bloomberg) -- It’s a plot better suited for a John Le Carre novel.

Two Japanese men are detained in Italy after allegedly attempting to take $134 billion worth of U.S. bonds over the border into Switzerland. Details are maddeningly sketchy, so naturally the global rumor mill is kicking into high gear.

Are these would-be smugglers agents of Kim Jong Il stashing North Korea’s cash in a Swiss vault? Bagmen for Nigerian Internet scammers? Was the money meant for terrorists looking to buy nuclear warheads? Is Japan dumping its dollars secretly? Are the bonds real or counterfeit?

The implications of the securities being legitimate would be bigger than investors may realize. At a minimum, it would suggest that the U.S. risks losing control over its monetary supply on a massive scale.

The trillions of dollars of debt the U.S. will issue in the next couple of years needs buyers. Attracting them will require making sure that existing ones aren’t losing faith in the U.S.’s ability to control the dollar.

The dollar is, for better or worse, the core of our world economy and it’s best to keep it stable. News that’s more fitting for international spy novels than the financial pages won’t help that effort. It is incumbent upon the U.S. Treasury to get to the bottom of this tale and keep markets informed.

GDP Carriers

Think about it: These two guys were carrying the gross domestic product of New Zealand or enough for three Beijing Olympics. If economies were for sale, the men could buy Slovakia and Croatia and have plenty left over for Mongolia or Cambodia. Yes, they could have built vacation homes amidst Genghis Khan’s Gobi Desert or the famed Temples of Angkor. Bernard Madoff who?

These men carrying bonds concealed in the bottom of their luggage also would be the fourth-largest U.S. creditors. It makes you wonder if some of the time Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner spends keeping the Chinese and Japanese invested in dollars should be devoted to well-financed men crossing the Italian-Swiss border.

This tale has gotten little attention in markets, perhaps because of the absurdity of our times. The last year has been a decidedly disorienting one for capitalists who once knew up from down, red from black and risk from reward. It almost fits with the surreal nature of today that a couple of travelers have more U.S. debt than Brazil in a suitcase and, well, that’s life.

Clancy Bestseller

You can almost picture Tom Clancy sitting in his study thinking: “Damn! Why didn’t I think of this yarn and novelize it years ago?” He could have sprinkled in a Chinese angle, a pinch of Russian intrigue, a dose of Pyongyang and a bit of Taiwan-Strait tension into the mix. Presto, a sure bestseller.

Daniel Craig may be thinking this is a great story on which to base the next James Bond flick. Perhaps Don Johnson could buy the rights to this tale. In 2002, the “Miami Vice” star was stopped by German customs officers as he was traveling in a car carrying credit notes and other securities worth as much as $8 billion. Now he could claim it was all, uh, research.

When I first heard of the $134 billion story, I was tempted to glance at my calendar to make sure it didn’t read April 1.

Let’s assume for a moment that these U.S. bonds are real. That would make a mockery of Japanese Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano’s “absolutely unshakable” confidence in the credibility of the U.S. dollar. Yosano would have some explaining to do about Japan’s $686 billion of U.S. debt if more of these suitcase capers come to light.

‘Kennedy Bonds’

Counterfeit $100 bills are one thing; two guys with undeclared bonds including 249 certificates worth $500 million and 10 “Kennedy bonds” of $1 billion each is quite another.

The bust could be a boon for Italy. If the securities are found to be genuine, the smugglers could be fined 40 percent of the total value for attempting to take them out of the country. Not a bad payday for a government grappling with a widening budget deficit and rebuilding the town of L’Aquila, which was destroyed by an earthquake in April.

It would be terrible news for the White House. Other than the U.S., China or Japan, no other nation could theoretically move those amounts. In the absence of clear explanations coming from the Treasury, conspiracy theories are filling the void.

On his blog, the Market Ticker, Karl Denninger wonders if the Treasury “has been surreptitiously issuing bonds to, say, Japan, as a means of financing deficits that someone didn’t want reported over the last, oh, say 10 or 20 years.” Adds Denninger: “Let’s hope we get those answers, and this isn’t one of those ‘funny things’ that just disappears into the night.”

This is still a story with far more questions than answers. It’s odd, though, that it’s not garnering more media attention. Interest is likely to grow. The last thing Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke need right now is tens of billions more of U.S. bonds -- or even high-quality fake ones -- suddenly popping up around the globe.

I was struck by this ...........

Emerald mines?
That was the first I had heard.
Odd that it hasn't been mentioned in the news.
The Paki's are tearing the place up, killing scores of civilians, supposedly with the intent of subduing the Taliban.
Seizing the mines seems like a wise thing to do if the Taliban are using the proceeds from the mines to finance their "new world order", and this is confirmed in another story found.....

And why did the Pakistan government shut them down really?
Know what I think?
The Taliban has been using them all along for funds, with the nod and approval from certain elements of the Pakistan government, namely the ISI.
And I'm not so sure about opium poppies funding them as well.
Karzai's brother was recently linked to drug smuggling and many of the warlords are also,
blaming the Taliban is good cover for the crooked ones running the show over there.

May 13, 2009 "Lew Rockwell" -- If you are a poor, hapless Afghan civilian whose family's bodies were ripped apart by U.S. bombs, does it really make a difference to you if the air "strikes" were ordered by the Moron from Texas, George W Bush, or the Agent of Change, Barack Obama? I would think not. If you were a Pakistani civilian whose village had been bombed by the U.S. would your heart be comforted by the fact that the mad bombers have a new, young, hip "Commander-in-Chief" who makes funny jokes to all the stenographers known as "The Washington Press Corps"? I sincerely doubt that as well.

Barack Obama sold himself to the country as someone who would bring massive "change" to the policies of the U.S. government, but of course when it comes to the favorite activity of that cancerous organism, warring against wholly innocent civilian populations in foreign countries, there will be no change. In fact, even the pleas of the President of the supposedly free and democratic country of Afghanistan are meaningless in the face of the U.S. government's desire to enforce its will on as much of the Earth as possible. I wonder if Americans would feel like they lived in a "free democracy" if the U.S. was occupied by a foreign military power that regularly killed our people and refused to stop? A power that calls refraining from murder as fighting with "one hand tied behind our back" as White House "National Security" Advisor James Jones recently did? I am pretty sure they emphatically would NOT.

This morning's news brings more information to us of "Barry's" latest slaughter, with at least 8 people in Pakistan dead, none of whom ever hurt a single innocent American. If they had hurt any U.S. soldiers in the region, that, of course, is wholly a result of the imperialists in Washington invading the region in the first place. To kill someone for defending themselves against aggression is the definition of tyrannical is it not? Or is the U.S. Government so holy, so infallible and morally upright that any who defy it are to be disposed of, like so much human garbage? Is a country that claims to be Christian really ready to accept the blasphemous idea that the U.S. Government is above any laws, even those of the God that the majority of Americans claim to believe in?

The Chinese proverb that opens this piece is true in all times and places, so let's call Mr. Obama by his real names: Wall Street Stooge, Zionist lickspittle, National Socialist, liar and above all, mass murderer.

While I was being tackled by security guards at Washington's Convention Center during the AIPAC conference for unfurling a banner that asked "What about Gaza?," my heart was aching. I wasn't bothered so much by the burly guards who were yanking my arms behind by back and dragging me-along with 5 other CODEPINK members-out of the hall. They were doing their job.

What made my heart ache was the hatred I felt from the AIPAC staff who tore up the banner and slammed their hands across my mouth as I tried to yell out: "What about Gaza? What about the children?"

"Shut the f--- up. Shut the f--- up." one staffer yelled, red-faced and sweating as he ran beside me. "This is not the place to be saying that shit. Get the f--- out of here."

Getting to the other side was becoming a pain in the ass because the footbridge I made had been knocked down during the "raging river" season. So I put it back up today but not before I had retrieved one of the 3 4"x6" x 16' timbers that had been washed downstream 200 or 300 feet by the raging river ( which is merely babbling this time of year.)
I knew where the timber was because I had located it on a hike about a week after it disappeared but was too lazy to deal with it.
But I couldn't find it.
Then I spotted it,........... under a tree.
This was pretty odd because the last time I saw it, it wasn't under a tree.
As a matter of fact , the last time I saw the tree, it wasn't on top of my piece of timber!
So the next time I saw that tree, it isn't going to be with my eyes.

This old oak tree, 60' tall with a trunk about 3' diameter, came crashing down yesterday. Landing across the creek bed and creating a snag that's gonna be serious trouble next rainy season if I don't get it outta there. Oy!
Pat had been hiking down there earlier in the morning and we're both very glad she wasn't there for the big fall.

Churchgoers more likely to back torture, survey finds

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new analysis.

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified — more than 6 in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only 4 in 10 of them did.

The analysis is based on a Pew Research Center survey of 742 American adults conducted April 14-21. It did not include analysis of groups other than white evangelicals, white non-Hispanic Catholics, white mainline Protestants, and the religiously unaffiliated, because the sample size was too small.

April 14, 2009 "Information Clearing House" -- -A recent article published in the respected peer-reviewed Open Chemical Physics Journal by nine noted scientists offers incontrovertible proof that the dust from the Twin Towers and Building Seven of the World Trade Center contains small intact samples of Thermite.

Thermite is a highly explosive agent consisting mostly of aluminum and iron oxide, and is used to cut steel in building controlled demolitions, and is also used in welding and in military applications.

Using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry, the scientists were able to determine that the Thermite present is of a specialized type called Nano-thermite or Superthermite. It burns hotter and has a lower ignition temperature than normal Thermite, and is produced at laboratories such as Lawrence Livermore, incidentally thought to be the same lab that produced the anthrax sent out shortly after 9/11.

Nano-thermite could not be accidentally present in dust samples collected at four different sites, nor could it be the result of clean-up operations at ground zero, as one of the samples was retrieved a mere ten minutes or so after the collapse of the second tower. All samples show the same consistency.

This would explain the streams of molten steel (not aluminum) falling from one of the towers, and the fact that steel remained molten in the rubble for more than a month after the event. There is no scientific explanation for this other than the use of Thermite, which can achieve temperatures of 3500 C, while under ideal conditions jet fuel can achieve just approximately 285 C. So what does it mean? It means that there is proof (which so far no one has attempted to refute) that the WTC buildings (and more than three thousand lives, counting the ongoing deaths of first responders and ordinary NYC citizens caused by the dust) were brought down by controlled demolition in a planned and purposeful manner by elements of the Bush Administration, most likely as a ‘catalyzing event’ , the new Pearl Harbor’ fondly mentioned by neo-con PNAC (Plan for the New American Century) and designed to galvanize American citizens in support of attacking other nations and restricting human rights at home. ‘Full Specter Domination’.

This was the excuse or invading Afghanistan and Iraq (there were plans for Syria and Iran as well, and perhaps others), for justifying domestic spying, disappearances, torture, and murder. Murder based on lies and deception, and the killing of American citizens.

Knowing, as he must by now, that 9/11 was conceived and executed not from some dark cave in Afghanistan, but much more likely from some deep bunker in dank Cheneystan, will President Obama still insist on ‘looking ahead’? Just how deep is America’s reserve of dismissal and denial?

I feel for all the victims of 9/11, past, present and future, but was especially haunted by those poor souls who chose to jump to their deaths, or who fell. Surely the people who did this need to be brought to justice. Otherwise America is not ‘looking ahead’. She has her eyes shut tight while she babbles inanities.

Well, another theory.
The thing that got me with this article are all the absolute statements......

"Nano-thermite could not be accidentally present in dust samples collected at four different sites, nor could it be the result of clean-up operations at ground zero, as one of the samples was retrieved a mere ten minutes or so after the collapse of the second tower. All samples show the same consistency."

The component parts that make thermite were indeed present in the building and could have mixed very easily, and the heat generated by the friction and pressure of the collapsing building would have been high enough to create the thermite reaction.

"This would explain the streams of molten steel (not aluminum) falling from one of the towers, and the fact that steel remained molten in the rubble for more than a month after the event. There is no scientific explanation for this other than the use of Thermite, which can achieve temperatures of 3500 C, while under ideal conditions jet fuel can achieve just approximately 285 C. It would also explain the otherwise physically impossible near freefall speed of the three buildings, and how they were able to fall so homogeneously."

The massive weight of the building in free fall pulverized everything below it, mixing the rusty steel superstructure with all other components of the building and its contents.

I disagree that there is no other explanation for the presence of molten steel other than thermite.
Due to the scale of the event, the environment within that collapse was beyond anything known at the time.
The intense heat and pressure caused by the collapse itself created conditions that were capable of producing what most people would conceive as "hell on earth" .
The collapse would have (absolute statement of my own) created thermite reactions throughout the entire building as it went down and those reactions would have continued for a long time after.

False complaints made against the breeder along with death threats and harrassment to both the breeder and Biden.
Their claim that animal shelter killings are caused by people who buy from breeders is beyond ridiculous.
Animal shelters kill animals because they are overloaded with animals that are abandoned by their owners or are lost because they are allowed to roam free.
Breeders are no different than anyone else in the sense that some are responsible, ethical people and some aren't.
To blame a breeder for the actions of a pet owner is simply wrong.
I've met more un-ethical pet owners in my life than un-ethical breeders.
People who let their dogs run loose because they want them to be free!
Free to do what dogs do, apparently even if that means anything from shitting in the neighbors yard to killing their chickens, or free to get run over by a car or bite someone or free to be exposed to any of the numerous dog maladies that inhabit the "outside " world.
And then there's the folks who abandon the animals because they have to move,
the list goes on and on.
The actions of some of the animal rights people mirror that of the un-ethical animal owners when they do things like breaking into farms and letting loose animals that have never lived in the natural world and are sure to be dead within a week.
"ah, but at least they died free!" cry the animal rights fools.
The thing with breeding is......
it's been done for centuries, most of the animals that are part of our lives were bred to be that way, to our benefit.
Guide dogs, herding dogs, hunting dogs, watch dogs.
Other animals as well, a multitude of cows and horses, pigs, chickens, goats
and I missing anything?
The animal rights people need a little reality check,
as with breeders and anyone else, some are good with intentions to match and some really suck.
They need to get their own house in order first.

Who killed Paula Loyd?

Last November, HTT Anthropologist Paula Loyd was attacked by an alleged Taliban member while conducting interviews with locals in Maywand Afghanistan.
She was doused with gasoline and set aflame. (here)
She passed away from the injuries in January
The perpetrator was apprehended and then shot dead by one of Loyd's associates.
For those not familiar with HTT, it is a program instituted by the US military for the purpose of understanding local culture.

When I first learned of this incident, there were many puzzling questions.
Why did she put herself in the position of being attacked in the first place?
A person of her background surely would know the risks involved with a woman speaking openly in public with local Islamic residents, particularly men.
Was she properly attired?
Did she have an escort?
Most of the accounts I've read put her with a second person, but it is not clear if the other was an armed escort, an interpreter or if that person was even nearby.
The shooter is identified by name and as an associate, but was away from the scene "chatting" with some US soldiers.
It seemed from first accounts that she was blatantly ignoring the risks and brought it on herself, which can't be discounted but yet it's hard to draw firm conclusions from a scenario such as this without more information.
Further reading on the subject reveals animosity between US military and the social scientists involved in the program.
The HTT members are apparently viewed with disdain by the soldiers. (here)

The shooter Don Ayala went to trial in February and plead guilty to the charge of manslaughter. (here)

I'd like to see the transcripts from the trial , the testimony of the witnesses, because the scenario doesn't quite fit. Where was her escort, the shooter? Did anyone else actually witness the attack?
The shooter said that he apprehended the attacker when the attacker ran directly towards them from the scene of the crime, but was he sure about the id? Did the shooter witness the attack?
Because Ayala plead guilty, I don't suppose any witnesses were called.
Questions about this incident need to be raised because of recent events in Afghanistan regarding other HTT people.
Death threats have been made against another female HTT member, Marilyn Dudley-Flores, and in the course of the investigation, some pretty disturbing events have come to light.

Sources allege that through the months of November and December 2008, Flores‐Dudley and other HTT female members were deliberately put in harm’s way by Milan Sturgis — a former HTT leader ‐‐ who sent Flores‐Dudley and female HTT members in known hot areas (like Qarabagh) where the Taliban was active, and, in one instance, knowingly had them wait for seven hours on a remote airstrip for a airlift back to Bagram, AB.

Further, the active duty lieutenant charged with protecting Dudley‐Flores and female teammates acted with discredit by fleeing and not covering Dudley‐Flores when she was fired upon (fire incident) and; in another incident, leaving his sidearm and other arms in a Humvee while a female HTT member was inside a structure interviewing Afghans who, it was later found out, were Taliban seeking intelligence.

Makes me wonder if Milan Sturgis was Paula's team leader as well.

Advocates told the Globe that Carter was chosen because of his combination of technical expertise and knowledge of defense strategy. He served in a senior Pentagon policy post from 1993 to 1996. But as a relative outsider, the Globe wrote, the 54-year-old Carter should be better positioned to make what Gates has said will be "difficult choices."

"He is not being brought in to help the defense industry thrive," Loren Thompson, president of the Lexington Institution think tank told the paper. "He is being brought in to decide what we need and what we can do without."

Always keep in mind that what goes on in the Middle East is always tied to the Carter Doctrine's pledge to protect US oil interests in the region.
The war in Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia and the threats to Iran all have a common purpose, to secure the US's access to oil.
We need oil as does the rest of the world, so it's not something we can ignore or walk away from. However, I take issue with the methods used.
Using force to intimidate competitors or clients is a tact that won't work in the long run. Using dictators or warlords to do our bidding will always come back to bite us in the ass.
I would suggest that rather than arguing about which political party is at fault or "the problem", we should focus our attention on the tired old government policy that has been employed by both parties for the last 30 something years that insists on using a sledgehammer and a kick in the ass to get the required results, which somehow never seem to work.
If you know your history, you are aware that the former Shah of Iran, Saddam Hussain, Osama Bin laden and a host of others were all at one time taking handouts from US in exchange for their cooperation in facilitating our policies.
None of those gambits have ever produced positive results and all have ended in war. Currently we are supporting and paying warlords in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Africa to "help" us. In the years to come, these are the characters we will be going to war against. This is a failed policy that time and time again has proven its uselessness.
Bush failed to change this situation continued it and Obama is likely to do the same. It appears as though all presidents are vetted and allowed into the upper political arena by "the powers that be", ie the military industrial complex and are obliged or steered towards this policy by the true policy makers. Any government agency such as the Pentagon or CIA that employs mostly current or former executives from companies such as Lockheed or Boeing or other weapons manufacturers is bound to espouse the beliefs of their companies and to choose policy that benefits those companies over policy that benefits "US".
Going after the president in this case is like killing ants above ground and never reaching the source which is below ground and out of site.

Taking a short break from lashing out at the international media for reporting the growing civilian death toll in the Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke in detail about the events leading up to the US abstention from the United Nations Security Council’s vote on the Gaza Strip ceasefire.

“Early Friday morning the secretary of state was considering bringing the cease-fire resolution to a UNSC vote and we didn’t want her to vote for it.” Olmert said. “I said ‘get President Bush on the phone.’ They tried and told me he was in the middle of a lecture in Philadelphia. I said ‘I’m not interested, I need to speak to him now.’ He got down from the podium, went out and took the phone call.”

A beaming Olmert then described telling President Bush “the US cannot possibly vote in favor of this resolution,” and spoke with pride of how embarrassed US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was at having to abstain from voting for a resolution she helped to organize and gather support for.

The US abstention shocked diplomats, and made it easier for Israel to dismiss the ceasefire out of hand. At the time of the vote Rice declared that the United States supported the draft but could not vote for it because of their “special relationship” with Israel. Just days later Rice too was lashing out at the resolution as “unacceptable.”

Been out of touch for awhile during the move of my life from a 4000 foot industrial building (work) and a 700 square foot house to a 16 1/2 acre ranch. There's a lot to do here that's been keeping me from blogging not the least being a buggy 28.8 kb dialup internet connection.
My basic production capabilities are up and running in the 600 foot shop that is present on the property and a bigger shop is in the works. Meanwhile the remainder of the shop properties are outside under tarps, which have been getting put to the test during an extremely wet December.

In the past,I've expressed some doubt here on the blog about the kind of "change" we could look forward to in an Obama administration and it looks like they were justified.
First his choice for the pastor to lead the invocation at the inaugural. He says that both sides need to learn to talk and compromise but if he didn't have his head up his ass, he would have noticed by now that the righties have no intention of talking or compromising. Why would they? They declared war on us years ago and won't stop...........ever.

We need a nonviolent social revolution to create a new political paradigm. Under the current system, the perpetuation of empire is institutionally preordained. We are permitted to reshuffle the cards and deal a new hand now and then, but always from the same stacked deck.

The situation in Palestine, along with many of the violent conflicts in the world, is nothing more than a symptom of the disease that is U.S. Empire. Gaza is just one more bloody scene in an ongoing imperial nightmare of death and destruction. If we want to stop the senseless killing taking place in Gaza, Iraq, Afghanistan and so many the other places, we must stand up and say no. Not just to the acts themselves, but to the fetid imperialist jugernaut which exports and cultivates them. It shouldn't come to any great shock that military reality includes the killing of women and children, even though they try with great predictability to deny it. Whether deliberate or incidently, women and children have been killed in the course of warfare for centuries. Sometimes they just "get in the way", sometimes they're killed to prevent the enemy from growing new warriors.
It also shouldn't shock anyone that the Bush administration has for years been punishing countries that receive US aid if they engage in the use of birth control and abortion.
The Popes too have been encouraging people around the world to be "fruitful and multiply".
Because of limited resources ( yes the earth has its limits) scientists and environmental groups have tried to encourage a limit to population growth. These efforts have led mostly to scorn and derision. "Chicken littles"and "Oh the sky is falling" chuckled the smart ones.
So the latest "plan" put forth by the US Army, although not shocking, marks a change in the excuses they use for warring on others .
No longer will it be for "democracy " or "freedom",
They have taken off the mask, and as we all knew they were anyway, will be fighting for resources.
A major threat in this war has been identified in this latest plan as the
"youth bulge"

The youth, the children of those who oppose us, are now the identified main targets of US hostility.

So the stock markets are continuing to go down the toilet,

If economics were a real science with real experts,

They would rig things so that everything always worked out fine.

Economists are to financial reality what military music is to music.
My usual news/info sources predicted this crash last year,
and another prediction(several months ago) from my sources stated that there would be a second more devastating drop.....right about now.
So really, it looks like what should have been a "no-brainer" ,
is turning out to be a major calamity,
created by a bunch of "no-brains".
They should have seen it coming,
or maybe they did,
or maybe it's sooooo bad that there isn't shit that anyone can do about it.
Our economy is so tied up to international interests that there isn't much anyone can do without pissing someone else off.
Our experts on both sides of the political aisle have sold us down the river,
caught between a rock and a hard place.
We have the biggest debt in history,
the wars are being fought on credit,
and as soon as our overseas financers can get out from under their dealings with US,
they're gonna ditch us like a bag of dope in a car being chased by the pohleeeeese!

That's our new doggie by the way, she's been running loose and getting into trouble,
so now she's got a home and maybe we can fatten her up a little.........
and teach her some economics!

Stark #4 9" bench lathe

Posting on this lathe just in case there's anyone else out there googling
Stark #4 9" bench lathe .
This is an oldie and one of the better quality machines I've seen.
The machined surfaces are ground, not milled and all the parts fit precisely.
The paint has chipped and chipped again and been re-painted who knows how many times, but that just adds to the charm because the paint has no effect on the quality of the parts produced on this machine.
And the basic shape of the thing is very artsy to say the least, I love it!
I picked this up on an internet auction and didn't realize until I put it in the shop that the motor is rated for 440 volt 3 phase power.
The best I can do here is 220 volt 3 phase, so for now it sits and collects dust.
The turret tailstock is in good shape as is the cross slide although it's not original, made by Wade also from Waltham. I think several of the companies in that area standardized their parts so that they could be interchanged. Kinda neat eh?
Waltham seems to have been a major source of precision machinery and must have been a cool place, if you like machining and casting and all that stuff. :-)
Tracing the history on this machine was fun.
Originally purchased and used in the toolroom of National Cash Register in Dayton Ohio,
it ended up in auction in La Verne California and how it got there is a mystery to me.
The age is unknown. Stark closed in the 1950's but I think it's older than that.
If it dates back to the 1910's or so, there's a chance it was used by one of the greatest US inventers

An article today in the San Diego Union discusses the current state of the "major" western oil companies and how they are loosing their grip on world oil supplies.
It's an interesting read and confirms what many already knew before the "mainstream" press got a hold of it, but it fails to connect the dots between oil and military missions.

"As late as the 1970s, Western corporations controlled significantly more than half of the world's oil production. These companies – Exxon Mobil, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Total of France and Eni of Italy – now produce just 13 percent.

Today's 10 largest holders of petroleum reserves are state-owned companies, such as Russia's Gazprom and Iran's national oil company.

Sluggish supplies have prompted a cottage industry of doomsday predictions that the world's oil production has reached a peak. But many energy experts say these “peak oil” theories are misplaced. They say the world is not running out of oil – rather, the companies that know the most about how to produce oil are running out of places to drill.

“There is still a lot of oil to develop out there, which is why we don't call this geological peak oil, especially in places like Venezuela, Russia, Iran and Iraq,” said Arjun Murti, an energy analyst at Goldman Sachs. “What we have now is geopolitical peak oil.”" (full story here)

Is it really any surprise that the countries mentioned here are areas where we are directly engaged in military conflict or saber rattling?

Is it really any surprise that the US has increased it's naval presence in Africa?

The use of oil as a fuel is becoming a real loser. It's dirty, expensive and getting harder to aquire. Factor in the cost of using the worlds greatest military machine to protect it and it becomes evermore clear that we could be using hamsters in exercise wheels to produce cheaper power.

We the tax payers are financing this "get it while you can" exercise and the sooner we stop going along with this charade, the sooner we can get on with a more positive cost effective approach to our energy needs.

So after spending the last week playing connect the dots, I've come to the conclusion that the Georgia invasion was the final act in a Russian ploy to consolidate their hold on the natural gas market to Europe.
The Nabucco Pipeline which was scheduled to be built in approx. 2010 was to deliver natural gas from Turkmanistan through the proposed Trans Caspian gas pipeline to the Baku Tablisi Erzurum natural gas pipeline to the proposed Nabucco line which was to deliver gas to Austria and beyond thereby bypassing Russian gas suppliers. Russia, through its invasion last week put to rest that grand plan. At least for the immediate future there apparently will be no Nabucco pipeline nor because of Russian actions in contracting for Turk gas ( here ) will there even be a source of gas to fill the pipe.

With the Nabucco plans off the table, the only sources for gas to Europe are Russia and Iran.
Another interesting recent move by Russia (Gazprom) was to invest in the Iran Armenia natural gas pipeline( here ) and then reduce its diameter so that it could not be used for a transit line beyond Armenia.
So there you have it.
Now that I've bored you to death with stories of one pipeline after another, here's a pipeline
( here )I'm sure you all will enjoy.

So what about bombing Iran? I don't think so. It likely is all bluster and no action, to what end I have no idea......yet.

Iranian Oil Minister Gholam-Hossein Nozari announced that Ankara and Tehran are negotiating on an increase in natural gas exports to Turkey and on supplying the country with more gas during the winter.
"During the Jeddah OPEC summit, the two countries discussed terms for a joint venture to lay a natural gas pipeline extending from the South Pars gas field to the Bazargan border," Nozari said.

Iran possesses the world's second-largest gas reserves after Russia. Many energy analysts and officials believe Iran can be a reliable energy supplier to Europe.
Turkey has been a consumer of Iranian gas since 2001. "

we were taking care of a friend who had suffered a stroke,
and during the course of interviewing for an aide,
our dear friend gave an absolute "NO" to one of the interviewees.

Woo Hooooooo It's a gusher!

I needed to cut and grind some steel for a project I'm working on and before I could do that I needed to replace the pulley that had fallen off the belt/disc sander machine.
Putting the pulley back on was no big deal, but I couldn't get the v-belt back on the pulley,
so I started loosening the bolts on the motor mount so I could get some slack in the belt.
That's when it happened!
The wrench slipped and I rapped my knuckles on the inside of the machine's pedestal.
The edges inside there were not deburred at the factory,
so almost as soon as I made contact with it,
the damage was done.
A lovely little gash about 1" long,
cut all the way through the layers of skin
and bleeding like a stuck pig.
Because of where the cut was,
I knew stitches would be necessary,
but I hate going to the doctor,
and getting an emergency appointment at Kaiser sucks.
Too many phone calls,
too much hassle,
and a waste of gas.
So I suggested to my wife that she stitch it up for me.
She refused at first, until I insisted I would not go to the doctor for such a ridiculous injury.
Well, so she found a sterile sutre kit in the medicine bag and stitched me up just fine!
What do you think?

And then came another couple and I saw the woman anxiously tearing little pieces from the tissue she was holding in her hands and stuffing them into her pocket.

And there was a woman with a little girl wearing slippers and no socks.

Barack Obama and Reverend Jeremiah Wright are in hot water. Newspapers and news stations across the world have been reporting on Wright’s “inflammatory rhetoric” (as Obama’s campaign is calling it) in 2003 when he called upon his Chicago congregation to reject the hymn “God Bless America” and instead shout “God Damn America.” Wright denounced the United States for historically advocating terrorism for its own purposes, for refusing to offer help to the hopeless, and for oppressing minorities. “God damn American for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme.” The re-surfacing of these comments has led Obama and his camp to scramble. They are now distancing themselves from Wright and, in reaction, some African Americans feel betrayed by Obama.

What is striking, historically, is that there is nothing new in Wright’s sermon and how often African American perspectives on so-called American Christian nationalism are ignored. It seems that each year, at least a handful of books come out trying to discern whether the United States was founded as a “Christian nation.” Most recently, this can be seen in Steven Waldman’s Liberating the Founders. But so often historians have approached the topic from the perspective of elite whites, and not the people who were building the nation from its foundation, hoeing the fields and raising the cotton, washing the clothes and preparing the meals. Munitions plant vaporizes in Albania

I came across a story on this yesterday on Truthout of all places and went looking for more elsewhere, but I really had to hunt. Yahoo had nothing on its front page, but Google did.
I went back to Yahoo and found the story but really it would have gone un-noticed otherwise.
So after I read the paper this morning I realized that there was nothing about it there either.
Why?
The basic story story as of this point is that 9 have died and hundreds are injured with buildings miles away being leveled by the shock wave of the explosions.
Reports state that there were 121 workers in the plant at the time, why they give a death toll of nine is beyond me. The facility was obviously vaporized along with the 121. Turns out most of the workers were women and children.........story here.
I suppose it could have been an accident, authorities are investigating possible criminal intent.
Makes me wonder though.
Albania is imbroiled in the conflict with Serbia and maybe just maybe........nah, it couldn't be that Russia bombed it to keep the munitions out of the hands of Serbias enemies?

Obama's been talking big about ending the war and bringing home the troops, but it isn't going to do any good if he hides his head in the sand about the reason why we ended up there in the first place. The Pastor at his church gave a pretty good account for why and now Obama is going to treat the man like he's got a bad case of leprosy.
Here's part of what the good pastor said.........
