Lets get pedantic

I'm fed up with the so called "conservatives" getting away with accusing certain people of being "Liberal" when in fact according to the definition, being Liberal seems to me to be a rather positive quality. In a recent election here, the Democratic candidate was accused of taking money from a "Liberal" organization (Move On), as though that in itself is some big crime. I think people are letting the rethugs off too easy when they don't challenge these types of attacks. Lets hold their feet to the fire and make them come up with something more substantial. I hear from people on our side that maybe we should call ourselves "progressive" because of what they've done to the word but I think we need to take the word back. Let them call us Liberals, so what! Nothing wrong with that. Demand a deeper explanation and you'll find that they don't have one.
I'm making up "Liberal" cards if anyone wants one. I'm a card carrying Liberal and proud of it!
While we're at it, lets take back the flag, they've been wearing it too long, and it never was intended to be apparel.

Thanks Wish.
The other side is starting to feel threatened. What used to be amusing grins directed at us during our roadside peacefreakings are now turning to glares and foaming insults.

Wish, who was it, I'm thinking Huey Long, who during an election campaign called his
opponent an asthmatic and the populace not knowing what the hell that was voted for Long in a landslide.
Kinda reminds me of all this "liberal" demonization.

Sign me up for one card; I'll carry it along with my panty-waist ACLU card.

Sometimes, Paul, I do worry about all the divisiveness on the left, though. I saw a televised statement by Nancy Pelosi, et al last night...snooze...she who wants to sit on anybody who wants to impeach, oops, CENSURE Bush. When are liberals going to get their balls back???

It's not that liberals don't have any balls, it's that middle of the roaders who try to distance themselves from us as though we are bastard children or un-wanted hitchhikers. The problem is that a lot of the Dems. that are identified by the right as liberal, aren't. Is Hillary a liberal? Not! Bill Clinton? I hear from the other side about what a socialist he is, gimme a break. The sooner the middle of the roaders accept us as part of the party and stand up for our beliefs, the sooner things will be right.
Maybe we should just outright abandon the party and join the Rethugs, after all it has happened before. It was the Rethugs who opposed the US entering WW2 and back then the Dems were the lynching party. Maybe we should just go with the flow and un-do the Rethugs from the inside out and let the Dems be.

I take your point. Brilliant idea to undo the Repugs from the inside out, if one can stomach them long enough to achieve that (not me!)

The Clinton liberals got centrist in order to appease the right & they've gotten themselves co-opted. And didn't get much backing for what was supposed to be the lib agenda. Oops. And still are (Pelosi).

Which is why, though I'd rather libs stand their ground, I do appreciate the efforts to think beyond that, because it's too easy for the Repugs to cast the liberal cause as a failed one, & we REALLY need to take Congress back, right now!

I'm curious, do you see any viable Presidential Dem. candidates on the horizon right now?

Well, the way I see it is that the "centrist" position is the loser. It has been since the Republican "Contract on America" in 1994. We can ponder why, but it is the way it is and it will continue to be a loser(I think) until the Dems start argueing their positions with confidence and stand their ground. So they get accused of being Liberal? So what, is that it? All they've got? Are the Rethugs shooting their wad when they make such accusations? It seems to me to be an easy accusation to reply to. Progressive, liberal thought and innovation has contributed greatly to this country, it has a rich history that can be brought to the table in any debate. The Democrats need to back off those cretins and force them to say something intelligent.
Viable Presidential candidates......
The grassroots folk seem to think Feingold is it, and I would support any candidate supported by them in the primary. But once the candidate is selected it ends up being a vote for the lesser of 2 evils and I would of course vote Dem. We're in this very situation here in Ca 52nd Congressional district, with a candidate who was not the choice of grassroots dems but we're still going to support him in the hoping of getting Duncan Hunter out.
I would love to hear the 2009 State of the Union Address being given by Cynthia McKinney.

Yes, indeedy, that's the way politix are played--the demon you can most stomach (& perhaps convince to grow bigger balls) v. the DEMON repug. Good luck to youse all in sunny San Diego, famed bastion of the right.

We have that same scenario playing out in WA state, with Maria Cantwell (a centrist who voted pro-war, for Patriot Act renewals, & let Alito slip by...& she wants my money & my vote?) Like Hilary, she apparently thinks the road to political survival is to throw enthusiastically in with the hawks. If I could, I'd withhold my vote just to spank her.

However, the alternative is the GOP candidate, former CEO of Safeco, & a long arch-conservative record in politix here, & asshole. So guess which way I'll be voting unless something better comes along.

Ditto for Dave Reichert, also trying to hold onto his seat. There's a woman dem running against him who's getting attention, but it is indeed hard to come out of nowhere, as she is, & face a Goliath in the form of a candidate who has the President fundraising for him. Yes, George himself was here. *ACK* *RETCH* I can only hope that WA residents who feel the same way are willing to give her a chance.

Still, it dismays me that there's even a question anymore. Yes, I am a dreamer.
