The Incredible Imploding Party

This is a diagram of the different types of people who tend to vote Democrat and it
illustrates why the party probably will never win big or live up to the hopes of its supporters.
It can't possibly please everyone without offending someone and if it even tried to, if it actually attempted to cater to all, the pressure on it would become so incredible that it would explode much in the same way the trigger on a nuclear device actuates detonation.
This is the primary reason why the republicans seem to win most of the time.
They are a simple folk. Give em a hot dog and a beer and stick them in front of the TV set and they're happy!
If the Rethugs need to energize them , just a simple BOO! will do!
Us Democrats are just simply too complex, too diverse.
Yeah, we can all agree to pool our votes for the lessor of 2 evils, but the truth of it is, no democratic candidate can please us all. And it is the primary reason why all of "our" candidates seem to be so wishy washy, flip floppy and generally stupid.
They have become a party capable of nothing more than snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I belong to at least 6 of those categories and find that many of the group goals overlap. The competing interests are not quite as bad as you state. I think the main problem is that the party bows to corporate and ideological interests that have nothing to do with their true "base", which then divides people on the left about whether to support them or villify them. They try to appeal to people on the right or the mystical center and mostly fail, when they should be proudly declaring their liberal and progressive values.

It's time to get over the fear of the l-word.

Yep, I belong to seven are you're right about their goals overlapping.
The thing is, the way others perceive those goals and how we go about achieving them can sometimes put us at odds with each other.
For instance, there was a person on Country Joes board who was a vegan and mostly she came across ok but then she started comparing the poultry industry with the holocost.
This kind of stuff doesn't play well with mainstream Merka, as a matter of fact it even annoyed me.
No doubt the chicken industry is a cruel one but it doesn't compare with the deliberate extermination of 6 million people.
Now we have all these people hurling insults at each other over Clinton and Obama and the whole scene does seem to be melting down.
I too have major problems with the candidates , for me they're not liberal enough and I can't support anyone who dismisses me because I'm a liberal.
I just can't keep on voting for the lesser of two evils, there is just no point in it anymore.
Obama talks about hope, but you know I've been hoping for years and it's never amounted to anything. It was a total disappointment Bill Clinton let bush senior and his cronies off the hook for the Contra scandal and all those creeps got pardoned. And now we have this piece of crap war that just seems to be growing on us like a permanent case of fungus and all the great leaders just twiddle their thumbs and shuffle. I can't believe that bush is still president after all of this and now McCain actually stands a chance. Hope is cruel.
Cynthia McKinney for President. I'd rather vote for the loser than evil.

VERY interesting post! As I noted in the post you commented on (and thank you!), everybody/everything seems to have gone extremism. "Either you think my way or else!!" That's nothing but Fundamentalism. No less a sparkling idiot than Zell Miller (R-GA) used to be a Democrat. So yes, we do tend to attract the occasional dingbat.:)

I've left the Democratic Party, never to return.

Zell said it best: "I didn't leave the Democratic Party: They Left Me." I'm proudly an Independent now, looking sadly upon the wreckage that was once a great party!

I hate to say this as an "introductory" comment, but the DP is the reason this reign of terror has lasted eight years. We all screamed relentlessly for this thing called impeachment, but nobody in the DP heard us.......

I have left the DP, never to return. I am now an Independent.
Zell Miller (yes, THAT Zell Miller), used to be a Democrat. He said something that came true for me, decades later: "I have not left the Democratic Party. It left me."

Inspired by Zell Miller?
Man if you scrape any deeper you'll find my own inspiring congresscritter Duncan Hunter.
