New law prompts Calif. county to halt all weddings

Kern County Clerk Ann Barnett has announced that she will no longer perform civil marriages,
because.......

"the increased demand for ceremonies would overwhelm her staff and pose office security risks"

Is she a lying sack of shit or what?

You know the scaredy cats have always contended that gay marriage would destroy the institution of marriage, but this action comes closer to the institutions destruction than anything a gay couple could possibly do.
If she refuses all civil marriages, then the way I see it is that the state can no longer accept marriages as a legal contract from churches either. To do so would be as un-constitutional as the situation was before the recent Supreme Court ruling.
And then what do you have?
No marriage contracts?
And then what?
Seems to me like she just kicked out the first block supporting the institution.

= Republican.

They don't (can't?) think with reason and or logic, as we do. Instead, they think as a cultist; a Fundamentalist, which is a cult, and they rely for all their thinking, on an invisible God, who strangely enough, always agrees with them. They can never give specifics on exactly HOW gay marriage will hurt us....just "God said so." That's why we're so stunned by so many of their actions. They are, for all intents and purposes, mindless, programmable robots.

You know, really, the woman ought to be fired. It's her job to marry people who have a license and if she doesn't have the resources, it's her job to make it work. I'm sure there are plenty of other qualified people who would be happy to have the job.

If folk want to marry, let it be, as long as they do it for "the right reason".
Just what is "the right reason", I have no idea whatsoever.
I tried marriage once, the civil ceremony cost me £34, and my daughters were there as bridesmaids!.
It didn`t work out, and at the end of twelve years, I was so broke, I got legal aid for the divorce!!

Hey Landsker, just found your reply in the blog inbox. Not sure why it didn't go to my mail as usual.
Marriage isn't for everybody and I too hope that there isn't a rash of marriages as political statements.
It's turning out to be a good thing for the economy here in Cali, maybe we'll be able to keep the schools open after all.
